6 reflection questions to ask yourself after a layoff to help guide your job search

Every time I open LinkedIn these days I see news of another layoff. What used to be rare is now very, very common. Working with clients that are experiencing unknowns and challenges in their careers means I regularly work with clients that have been impacted by layoffs. It's one of the scariest and most challenging times folks are facing in their careers right now.

When I work with laid off clients, I ask them to walk me through what happened and how they have arrived where they are when we start working together. The story I hear from folks time and again goes a little something like this. I got laid off. I was sad, angry, and confused. I started searching for a new job right away. I've been on the search for months. I've applied to hundreds of roles. I don't even know what I want to do next, but I need validation that I don't suck and I need a job.

These words always ring in my head after talking to someone who has been laid off. "I started searching for a new job right away."

So often, I see people let the panic and unknown of not having a job drive them to act ASAP. Sometimes within hours of being laid off. They apply for roles that are exactly like the one they just left, regardless of how they actually felt about the work.

A layoff is a reset that none of us ask for, but may be an opportunity for reflection and adjusting your career trajectory. Avoiding the pull to start sending our your resumes ASAP and instead taking an hour or two to reflect on your past role, whenever you are ready, can give you valuable information that can focus your job search for the better.

Here's 6 reflection questions I recommend:

  1. What did I love about my last job and what did I dislike?

  2. Was my job satisfying for my heart and brain?

  3. Was there another job that I was curious about or coveting while I was there?

  4. What did I learn about myself during my tenure at that job?

  5. What from my employee benefits did I actually use? What do I wish they had offered?

  6. What boundaries do I wish I would have had in place at this job?

By taking the time to reflect and answer these six questions, you’ll gain clarity on what truly matters to you in your next job. You'll be able to be more focused and intentional about your job search.

These questions can also help you do three key things.

  1. Determine if you want to stay in your field or if you want to career shift or try something new.

  2. Know what kind of culture & benefits you are wanting to find in your next role. The questions above can also help give you talking points about why these things are important to you.

  3. Determine what you want to change about the way you approach your work going forward.

A layoff, while challenging, can serve as a catalyst for growth and positive change. Embrace the opportunity to reassess your career goals and pursue a path that aligns with your values and aspirations. With a clear sense of direction and purpose, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the job market and find a role that not only meets your needs but also brings you satisfaction and success.
